about mediation of separation and divorce issues

Mediation for separation, divorce, and post-divorce issues allows the couple to retain control over the decisions that matter to them. The mediator acts to facilitate difficult discussions, provides a structure in which the couple can work together to make their best decisions in a difficult and stressful time, and guides them through the issues that they must address.

Mediation is used in self-referred and court-mandated cases, with high conflict and highly collaborative couples. It provides an outstanding way for couples to make informed decisions that are not imposed by others, and to fully discuss their concerns, wishes for the future, and their needs prior to making decisions in a much less formal process than trial.

In private mediation settings, couples who address both financial and parenting issues may meet with a mediator for five or six sessions. Court manadated mediations may specify the scope of what is mediated and pre-determine the length and number of sessions depending on court rules and requirements in each location.
